The Night is Deep and Wide by Gillian Sze and illustrated by Sue Todd uses repetition, gentle, softly, sleepy words to lull your little one to sleep. This board book shows the flowers, the birds, the cats and even the home getting ready to sleep. We see the child and a parent reading from this book as they get the child ready for bed. It is a sleepy, bedtime board book that is full of wonder about a child’s immediate world at night.

The illustrations by Sue Todd are both vibrant and quiet. Sue Todd’s unusual and wonderful lino cut method of making book illustrations set the mood for sleep in black and white, with just the smallest sprinkling of color, only one color per page. We see red tulips, the sienna brown of earth and a cat, yellow fireflies and the yellow light of a window inviting the child to come inside to get ready for bed. It is so unusual to see lino cut art. Unless you have other Sue Todd illustrated books on your child’s bookshelf – and you should – this one will really stand out.

It was published by Orca Books and is available on Amazon and in Bookstores that love great illustration. You will find links to Amazon in the US and in Canada in the comments above.
