Terry Fox was only 22 years old when he began a run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. That was 30 years ago. The most remarkable part of Terry’s run and his life was that he was a student athlete who thought his career as an athlete was over when his right leg had to be amputated because of osteogenic sarcoma, a cancer of the bone. So, he set off to run across Canada running and hopping on his artificial leg.

Every Canadian who was alive in the 1980’s knows Terry’s story. Everyone who was alive then has seen his final video when he was forced to give up his cross-Canada run just outside of Thunder Bay Ontario when the cancer resurfaced in his body.

Remarkably his life, his stellar character and his effort to raise money for cancer research is still celebrated to this day. Schools and communities across Canada hold community runs to raise money in his name every autumn. He was voted Canada’s Greatest Hero in 1999.

I think children might not know Terry’s life story, but if they read this book, Meet Terry Fox by Elizabeth MacLeod illustrated by Mike Deas, they will know what they are running for. Whether this book is in the hands of a child in Canada, the US or any other country, this will be an inspiring story of courage and hope. Terry’s life is a study of the strength that can result from being of strong character and determination in the face of struggle.

Biographies can give kids role models, and the reason that Terry Fox is different than other role models is that he was young when he ran his last race, and young when he died. He really is a hero for the ages.
